A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
