Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
