A Pair of Cuba-Headed Relief Ships Reported Lost following Leaving Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and rescue mission is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Search and Rescue Operations Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of nine sailors, according to a navy statement.
The boats had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
The Situation of Aid to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island endures repeated national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are fitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official for the convoy said.
The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from each country along with their consular staff.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Recent Aid Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had transported a significant amount of donated goods to the nation.
That ship, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which Castro returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
International organizations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Political tensions have been ramped up lately, with remarks from several leaders emphasizing the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
In response to certain statements, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The Mexican navy stated it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the vessels and ensure the security of the people on board.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
