The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
