In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, according to the country's military command.
Attack Particulars and Military Significance
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the location. This represents not the first instance where Ukraine has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit targets on Russian territory.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the primary suppliers of fuel products in Russia's south and is directly involved in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the War Front
In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with envoys of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on potential pathways to end the war.
“It was a really good conversation: many details, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a messaging platform. “There are some new ideas on how to move toward a genuine peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, certainly, the timeline.”
Legal Crackdown Within Russia
In a parallel domestic matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the Left Front movement, was given to six years in prison.
This case reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov shared backing another group of Russian activists accused of forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as fabricated and, following the verdict, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Case
Russian authorities indicated it is in contact with French officials regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar serving a three-year sentence in Russia and allegedly facing new charges of spying.
A spokesperson stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is monitoring the situation, with all government services mobilised to provide consular support and advocate for his release at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
A theatre in Mariupol, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while many civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is set to open its doors again. Authorities in control have heralded the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.
However, former actors from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Moscow effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of dissenting voices and property seizures from Ukrainian citizens.
The theatre is due to reopen by the end of the month with a performance of a classic Russian story, following its reconstruction largely anew over the last 24 months.
