Ahead of marking his sixth anniversary as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The Spanish coach assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. But, that first major trophy is still his lone significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“I can,” he stated upon being asked about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things must occur in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

This weekend sees the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced immediately following his role was made public.

The Current Landscape

Given that trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This potential shift notwithstanding Arteta managing a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

Arteta is under a contract with 18 months to run on the deal he signed in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver in the immediate future.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, stressing the ongoing need to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He added, praising the consistent faith from the club's ownership, while singling out the team's buy-in as most crucial. “In the final analysis, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the weekend fixture dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is anticipated to sideline him for the coming weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
