One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
