The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
