The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
