The Two Fatalities Named in the Ivy League School Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Manhunt for Killer.
The pair of scholars who died in the recent violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their killer persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect of interest in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s branch of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences on social media, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”
The Second Victim
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, family members said.
Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.
Details of the Attack
Nine more persons were hurt in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a raid at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.
“There is a killer at large,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our public”.
The assailant discharged a weapon inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a authority reported to the news agency.
Officers that searched the inn found two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was taken into custody, according to reports.
Condition of the Injured
Regarding the nine injured, one student was released from the hospital, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.
An educational institution, a independent school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Additional Memorials
Cook was honored at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, companions, and peers and lament the passing of his promising future.”
