Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee when the Nuggets lost 147-123 to the Heat.

The Serbian center sustained the injury late in the first half following an unintentional contact with teammate Jones.

The other player landed on the footwear of the MVP, and he instantly went down to the court holding his leg.

The star, who tops the NBA season in rebounds and dimes, recorded a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup before incurring the setback.

He will have an MRI on the following day to evaluate the seriousness of the injury.

"Instantly, Jokic realized he was hurt," stated Denver coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone who gets hurt, that's gut-wrenching, especially somebody as talented as Jokic. We will know more tomorrow."

"We will continue together. Obviously, at this moment, I'm focused primarily about Jokic as a person and the frustration of experiencing a situation like that."
