Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for several Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season proved no match against a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
