When Swimmers Escaped Danger, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed pops reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the avenue, conversing with a couple who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed to Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was the only one running in the direction that all the others was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He moved towards something that surely every instinct would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, police and paramedics treating numerous those hurt.

Collective Reaction and Support

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility beside the scene of the attack transforming into a makeshift treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, for instance going into the ocean to save people in distress.

Following the events, comments of support flooded in. A social media message conveyed thanks for the responders who showed that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.

The team of lifeguards published a message, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and solidarity. We are touched by the care for our team,” the group commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those affected.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional lifeguards, said that the team performed exceptionally from the instant the incident began right into late that night.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” stated a council representative.

“The team show altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned coastlines secure for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
